THE OZU DIARIES dir Daniel Raim

THE OZU DIARIES
USA | 2025 | Documentary | 140 min | Japanese, Chinese, English, and French with subtitles | Vermont Premiere
FRIDAY, MARCH 13 | 12:30 PM | SAVOY UPSTAIRS
In The Ozu Diaries, a master filmmaker finds his voice in the grey, disciplined shadows of a nation at war. With excerpts from Yasujirō Ozu’s personal writing, samplings from his films, and interviews with filmmakers such as Wim Wenders, Tsai Ming-liang, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film traces Ozu’s life making movies and living in a changing Japan. As Japan moved into a more light-hearted era of peace after WWII, Ozu’s lens traded the heavy blacks and whites of survival for the vibrant, domestic warmth of Technicolor. This transition created a cinematic experience where the glowing red of a teapot or the amber of a summer afternoon does more than just fill the frame; through this synesthetic lens, the audience can practically feel the steam and taste the bittersweet harmony of a family life. A wonderful tribute to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, The Ozu Diaries will warm your heart.

Working with a community of artists, John Killacky creates a meditative reflection of bodies that have been demonized, weaponized, and politicized.
Q&A with director of Corpus, John Killacky, before the feature.
Barbara Hammer started making films when she was 27 years old. At the time, she was still married to a man. Filmmaking led her to feminism and feminism helped her discover her sexuality, and in 1970, Hammer came out as a proud lesbian and began a long, prolific career of experimental filmmaking authentic to the lesbian experience. Hammer’s visually rich, sensual films were groundbreaking—she wasn’t afraid of her sexuality. She reveled in it. In a documentary true to the rebellious spirit of its subject, Barbara Forever incorporates present day interviews with archival footage and excerpts from Hammer’s work, celebrating Hammer’s journey as a lesbian and a filmmaker who followed her passion while being largely unrecognized by the commercial art world for decades.
Content advisory: sexual content, nudity
